About Jocotepec

Jocotepec sits at the western end of Lake Chapala, about 18 km from Ajijic, and has a character all its own. It's a genuine Mexican market town — less expat-influenced than the central lakeside communities — known for its colourful sarapes (woven blankets), its lively Sunday market, and some of the most affordable rents on the lake. The town is growing in popularity among both budget-conscious expats and Mexican families looking for lakeside living without the premium.

Restaurants & Food

Restaurant El Barco

Popular local restaurant on the main square serving fresh lake fish, carne asada, and cold beers with a view of Jocotepec's busy plaza.

Tacos El Güero

Street-side taco stand near the market famous for its slow-cooked birria and pork carnitas — a Sunday morning institution.

La Playita Jocotepec

Casual palapa restaurant on the lakeshore serving fried fish, shrimp cocktails, and micheladas with relaxed lake views.

Activities & Things To Do

Jocotepec Sunday Market

The best weekly market on the western shore — fresh produce, regional cheeses, sarapes, and street food spread across several blocks of the town centre.

Sarape Shopping & Weaving Workshops

Jocotepec is the sarape capital of the lake — visit artisan workshops and family stores to see traditional weaving and buy authentic blankets, tablecloths, and textiles.

Western Shore Sunsets

The western end of the lake catches the last light of day beautifully — the sunsets from Jocotepec's malecón and lakeshore are considered the best on all of Lake Chapala.

Day Trip to Tizapán el Alto

A short drive south of Jocotepec leads to the smaller lake town of Tizapán el Alto, worth a half-day visit for its market and relaxed character.
